What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that lines the uterus (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other areas of the pelvis. This tissue can cause inflammation, scarring, and pain, and can also lead to fertility problems.
Symptoms
The symptoms of endometriosis can vary, but common signs include painful periods, chronic pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and infertility. Some women may also experience digestive problems, fatigue, and bloating. However, some women with endometriosis may have no symptoms at all.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of endometriosis can be challenging, as it often requires a laparoscopic surgery to visualize the pelvic area and confirm the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus. However, a thorough medical history, physical exam, and imaging studies can also provide valuable information for diagnosis.
Treatment
There is currently no cure for endometriosis, but there are many treatment options available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Pain management options include over-the-counter or prescription pain medication, hormonal therapy, and surgical removal of endometrial tissue. For women who are trying to conceive, fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be recommended.
